Documentation Centres in Germany

A central documentation facility covering today's Orient has been available since 1966 at the Deutsches Übersee-Institut (the German Overseas Institute) in Hamburg (Übersee-Dokumentation, Near East section/ORDOK) whose speciality is on-line research. The documentation sections of the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (Science and Politics Foundation) in Berlin, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Auswärtige Politik (German Foreign Policy Society) in Berlin, and the Deutsche Stiftung für internationale Entwicklung (DSE - German Foundation for International Development) in Bonn are also linked with the Hamburg set-up.

There are special documentation centres for individual thematic areas, making available texts and materials for research purposes. These include the Berliner Institut für vergleichende Sozialforschung (Berlin Institute of Comparative Social Research - with an emphasis on migration and minorities in Europe) and the Christlich-Islamische Begegnungs-und Dokumentationsstelle (CIBEDO - Christian-Islamic Meeting-Place and Documentation Centre) at Frankfurt/Main, which focuses on inter-religious dialogue and Muslims in Germany).

Increasing on-line utilization of specialized libraries and documentation centres also improves general possibilities for scholarly research and access to the necessary literature even for highly specialized Orientalists in Germany. It is in the interest of libraries, users, and overall research policy to further extend such potential in future.
