For a long time much German research into Islam was directed towards traditional texts and the history of Islamic culture. Today the emphasis is increasingly on the development of Muslim societies and modern forms of Islamic thought - without, however, neglecting connections with the normative and historic sources of Islamic culture.

A glance at conference programmes and projects shows that multidimensional issues largely dominate today's research: the course and impact of globalization processes in Islamic countries, changing relations between local cultures and Muslim societies, reactions at home and abroad to Europe's relationship with Islam, and, not least, the development and articulation of Muslim minorities in Europe and other non-Muslim societies in Africa and Asia. Scholars are also paying particular attention at present to the question of establishment of a European Islam in discussion with Muslim scholars from Europe and the Islamic world.
