Financial Assistance and Projects

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG - German Research Association, www.dfg.de) is German science's means of self-administration, heading the field in its support for research in the realm of cultural and sociological aspects of Orient Studies. Above all, Special Spheres of Research (SFB) and Graduate Colleges constitute outstanding forums for thematically focused interdisciplinary co-operation between Middle Eastern Studies and related aspects of scholarship. In addition at universities they offer young scholars a chance of gaining further academic qualifications. Statistics show that Middle Eastern and regional emphases are represented in sub-projects in many programmes (DFG annual report 2002)

The Volkswagen-Stiftung (Volkswagen Foundation, www.volkswagen-stiftung.de) as the second largest source of assistance supports scholarly innovation and co-operation of contemporary relevance in the sphere of Oriental Studies. Mention should be made here of the extensive financing of such research which got under way in 1971. Since 1992 the Foundation has supported research projects and conferences devoted to problems and possibilities of intercultural understanding with a programmatic emphasis on "Constructions of Otherness and Selfhood. Processes of intercultural delimitation, mediation, and formation of identity". Another priority is "Europe and the Orient: Scholarly focus on Central Asia/Caucasus".
